Guild Wars 2 as i see it (and why i started to play it, since well, i already play FF14 and got on-going sub to it and enjoy raiding there) is more like "all-rounder" mmo that has after years of finding it's own unique way become the "open world mmo" and the WvW mode is fun (open world pvp in 4 maps 24/7). It does it in a fun way.

Pick a spec or ability set and unlock it completely (unless locked due to level restrictions). It is possible to stay on core specs and not use elite specs, but usually elite specs are more powerful.
